SALT & THE WITCH.
There is a mistaken belief among many Christians that witches are terrified
of salt, the Priestly commentators said that salt was the symbol of
Salvation used in Baptism Rites of the only " Church " & holy water would
protect one from witchcraft, wi tches, the devil & other demons. These same
commentators further declared that at witches Sabbaths [ Sabbats] no salt was
ever placed on the table or used on the food in any manner & anyone not using
salt cellars or vats was there fore in league with the devil.[As salaries
were paid in salt at the time,. a good Christian should take note of how the
salt was received by the peasants & identify the devil worshippers in their
midst.] As we know salt isn't only used in our Rituals but the formula fo r
Holy or Blessed water dates back further than Christianity to Pagan times.
At the witches Sabbat no central salt cellar or vat was used but rather
several smaller ones, so that there was no one sitting above or below the
salt to signify rank, all are equal at a witches feast. All are seen as
brothers & sisters in the Craft & all are children of the Goddess & God. No
social distinctions were ever allowed.
Modern Wiccans still follow this " Old Belief " & there are always more than
one salt shaker on the Feast table. Some witches will use tiny salt & pepper
pots at each place setting. Another Belief still used today is that Ritual
foods are always Ble ssed & infused with love, during the preparation &
cooking & the first portion served is placed in a special dish & offered to
the Elemental Realms after the Feast, along with the cakes & ale from the
Rite itself.
BLESSED BE.
