Magical name

Your magical names

Many Wiccan books discuss the taking of a magical name. The ceremonial

Bestowing of such a name upon an initiate is part of all traditions, afterward

The new Wiccan is usually exclusively called by this name within circle,

Especially at Esbat rites where only coven gathers.

Many Wiccans have two or more such names. A public craft name used at pagan

Gatherings & when writing articles & so on, & a secret name used only when

Addressing the gods during solitary rites & prayers, this name is given to

The child at the birth rites by the parents or is the one taken at the first

Self-dedication ritual.

The third name corresponds with the degree system within the coven & will

Change with each degree.

At life initiations other names are chosen to honour the gods at maiden /

Warrior, kinging / queening & elder rites these are usually used within the

family group.

For many Wiccans taking a new name is an outward symbol of his / her religion

& devotion to Wicca.

It is seen as part of the process of rebirth into a new religion. The major

Reason for utilising a craft name is use of a magical one gives the Wiccan a

Sense of power & mystery & helps shift the conscious mind in preparation for

Ritual & during the rite. It promotes a shift from the mundane world to the

spiritual one.

Some people take an entirely different approach, they legally adopt their

Wiccan name [the name used for pagan gatherings.] Leaving their old life

behind. This legal avenue is inadvisable unless you're completely open about

Your religion, since such a name will naturally draw attention to its bearer

& if you should marry to your family. The second thing to keep in mind should

You chose to come out of the broom closet is that this name should vibrate to

Your karmic path number or be the vibration you wish in your life &

Compatible with the original name vibration, keeping in mind that each new

Name brings with it both good & bane vibrations.

How do you find your magical name?

There are many approaches, some Wiccans adopt the name of a goddess or god of

their choice to honour them, others look into their family's cultural history

& choose a name from this associated folklore or mythology, this could

Include place names such as Avalon, Irin, Tara, Arcadia, etc.

Neo-pagans & contemporary Wiccans in America incorporate an animal in their

name such as howling-wolf, eagle- wing, white-dove etc, others use flower,

Herb or gemstones & trees such as amber, jade, holly, ash, melissa, sage,

Goldenrod, etc & some simply make up names which consist of two words linked

Together which are usually quite descriptive such as fair-breeze, river-wind,

Moon-beam, shadow-dancer, etc.

Still other popular names include Merlin, Morgan, Morgana, Lugh, Amber,

Pearl, phoenix, Thor, Isis, calling out one of these names at a large pagan

Gathering will cause many heads to turn.

Use your chosen name in ritual, prayer, & when being introduced to others in

The craft it will also protect you from those whom are trying to infiltrate

the occult for the wrong reasons. Get used to writing it in runes & use it to

mark your books too Ls etc. Keep a record of your names in your book of

Shadows with the exception of your secret name which is never written down

any where.

Blessed be
