Requirements For Handfasting
BRIDE & GROOM PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING:
Handfasting jewellery such as rings etc. [ See Ritual]
Small white cushion traditionally made by Bride, approx. 6 inches square, can be of satin, lace or velvet, it can be decorated with love runes, their initials etc.
A flower pot with soil & 2 flower bulbs of choice, can be decorated with runes.
One large broom, grass, not plastic please! decorate with flowers & ribbons. The stake may have runes carved or painted on it. The flowers may be fresh, paper or material. The handfasting colours are red, green & white, though silver & gold may also be used.
Two red cords or ribbons, aprox 3 feet each.
Flowers carried by the Bride, small posy of flowers, herbs, ferns & ribbons or a single flower of choice tied with long ribbons. If the Handfasting is done at Beltain Hawthorn may be used, never use Hawthorn at any other Festival or Rite.
List of guests & list of what they are bringing to eat & share.
Mead or Champagne for toast & a large box of wine for the Wedding punch.
Wedding cake or small bags of sugared almonds for each quest.
A white face cloth & towel, these may be hand- made & decorated.
The music to be played during & after Handfasting Rite.
The photographer, camera, spools etc.
A small basket of flower petals, decorate if you wish.
The paper plates, cups & serviettes for feast.
If your guests wish a copy of the HANDFASTING RITE, it will be provided at 10 cents per page. Please provide your sponsors with theirs if they are not part of our group.
The Bride may use a white dress or robe, the groom may dress in black or wear a robe of his choice.
THE SPONSORS & WHAT THEY PROVIDE
The sponsors are usually chosen this way, the male sponsor is like the Groom's closest friend / Bestman & the female is the Bride's best friend, who corresponds to the Bridesmaid / Maid of Honour. It is best that they are Pagans, as they have speaking parts within circle. They should wear robes if possible or wear black or white clothing & flower / herb crowns.
They provide & make the willow crowns for the bridal couple, which are decorated with flowers, herbs & ribbons, the two crowns are t hen linked with a long white ribbon 4 to 5 foot long, a small silver bell is hung at the mid -point.
They each provide a small red love bag & a silver charm, [Traditionally a silver horseshoe but any appropriate charm may be given] female sponsor the Bride, & male sponsor the Groom. Love herbs & spices, love stones & runic wishes for their good luck, health, wealth & happiness are placed within this bag. It may be decorated as they wish. LOVE STONES: Examples are, Rose quartz, agate, amethyst, amber, emerald, pink tourmaline, pearl, sapphire, moonstone. LOVE HERBS & SPICES: Examples are, Basil, beans, camomile, chilli, cinnamon, cloves, dill, geranium, licorice root, jasmine flowers , hibiscus flowers, ginger, gardenia.
They also provide the sweet pudding for the Bridal Feast & something to drink.
VISITORS PROVIDE A SMALL GIFT & SOMETHING TO EAT & SHARE WITH EACH ONE
PRESENT. They may if they choose wear flowers or flower crowns, males may use greens. [see priest below.]
THE PRIEST & PRIESTESS PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING:
All tools necessary for rite, the rice & bowl, herbs used in rite, the large white decorated Handfasting candle, the rose incense & special oil for rite, a stool, almond cookies for cakes & ale, water jug of charged water, a large bowl of charged herb brew, large chalice, altar flowers & ribbons for cauldron, honey & fruit for honeymoon punch, a gift for Bride & Groom & something to eat & share. Priest wears a crown of greens, [Oak, pine, grape vine ,ivy, rosemary etc.] the Priestess a flower crown.
GUARDIANS & OTHER OFFICERS OF COVEN.
A small gift, [ Wiccan craft work or bought] & something to eat & share with all present. Should also wear flower crowns or flowers if female or crowns of greens [see priest above]
AT LEAST TWO DRY RUNS OF THE RITUAL ARE NECESSARY BEFORE RITE, BRIDE, GROOM, BOTH SPONSORS, ALL OFFICERS OF COVEN MUST BE PRESENT PLEASE. PLEASE BRING YOUR PRINT OUTS.
