THE COVEN BANNER.

Every Coven has its name, rules, degrees, secret codes or signs, its guardian

/s & Coven / Initiation sword & shield etc.

Today's Neo Pagans & Wiccan groups also have a "Coven Banner" which is

displayed at large Pagan gatherings & at Festival & Esbat Rites.

The banner is usually 2 ft by 4 ft, with a 3 ft dowel across the top.

Attached to both ends of the dowel is a leather thong, which can be hooked

over a small branch at the gathering site or the banner is attached to a

pole, which is planted into the ground at the chosen site. When creating a

Coven banner each one in the coven should put his / her ideas into the

creation of it, & all should have a turn to work on it.

The material should be strong & hard wearing & of a neutral colour.

The covens symbol, name in runes etc can be painted on, sown on, glued on or

embroidered.

Other decorations such as long ribbons, fringes, stones, shells, feathers,

crystals may be added depending on your groups taste.

I am not sure how far back this banner dates or has been used in Wicca, & I

suspect that it has come about in the last 20 to 30 years, by the "New Pagans

of America."

It is apparently based on the banners of the Celtic Knights of Old.

Today the making of this " Coven Banner " is considered as part of group

bonding & Wiccan craft working.

At large Pagan gatherings in the U S A hundreds of Coven banners wave gaily

in the breeze & some are real works of art, that will I'm sure be treasured &

passed on from generation to generation.

BLESSED BE.
